Don’t worry, this is very normal for hippos. The hippo “sweat” is an oily secretion released by the animal’s mucous glands. While it is sometimes referred to as red sweat or blood sweat, it is neither blood nor sweat but a combination of hipposudoric acid and nor-hipposudoric acid. These two substances play an important role in protecting the hippo’s health.

Good news - mama’s fine.

Hippos excrete a substance known as Hipposudoric acid. It’s a natural form of sunscreen and an antimicrobial agent for hippos.

Aside from which, with the amount of zookeepers currently keeping tabs on baby Moo Deng, there’s no way they wouldn’t have tended to mama if she were hurt.
