This is the most normal-looking guy I’ve ever seen host the show

327

u/CilantroLarry47 Feb 23 '24

Looks like a regular guy living out his Make A Wish

77

u/thoriginal Feb 23 '24

He does have that weird strength... 👀

34

u/kidsaredead Feb 23 '24

Phil must be so proud of his boi rn

14

u/joeyGOATgruff Feb 23 '24

Would you rather be shot in the head of 69 your dad?

Phil: goddammit Shane!

10

u/CousinsWithBenefits1 Feb 23 '24

You see Cena coming you get the fuck outta there.

He’s got the physique of a guy who says “let’s look at the rest of the body cam footage before coming to any conclusions…”

13

u/MatsThyWit Feb 23 '24

This is the most normal-looking guy I’ve ever seen host the show

He looks like someone you would have seen on the show in that 1975 season. He's like someone crammed Belushi and Aykroyd into a blender and this is what came out. Hosts have virtually never looked like this.

35

u/TetraLovesLink Feb 23 '24

He's a bit of a day walker.

7

u/CousinsWithBenefits1 Feb 23 '24

I HAVE A CAT!. NAMED..... GERTRUDE!

27

u/GabeBlack Feb 23 '24

He dodged down syndrome

25

u/r_k_ologist Feb 23 '24

It winged him

29

u/NotCanadian80 Feb 23 '24

Do normal people look like they placed 5th in the Special Olympics?

17

u/Catch_ME Feb 23 '24

I think he used that joke against himself already

42

u/TEEMO_OR_AFK Feb 23 '24

He really is a man of the people.

16

u/qpv Feb 23 '24

Which people?

21

u/Acrobatic_Advance_71 Feb 23 '24

The dawgs.

13

u/BennyBingBong Feb 23 '24

Beautiful Dawgs

5

u/NeverBeenOnMaury Feb 24 '24

The slow ones. It's nice developmental disabilities people finally have their champion.

He looks like the first person with Down syndrom to make it to the NFL.

2

u/tyler-86 Feb 23 '24

That might be what's throwing me off. Part of my brain is screaming "impostor!" but I think it's more how he looks than his history with the show.

2

u/trythebebes Feb 23 '24

looks kinda like David Koechner before he went bald 😂

4

u/Fastbird33 Feb 23 '24

Honestly Pete Davidson looks normal to me. Like if I didn’t know him I wouldnt think he’s a celebrity at all. Adam Sandler too.

1

u/KarlHungus311 Feb 23 '24

He looks like a thumb that grew a face

u/thephartmacist Feb 24 '24

Looks like a cast member

5

u/Limp-Ad-2381 Feb 23 '24

I wouldn't have cried.

33

u/whyisjake Feb 23 '24

Or Trump meets Biden?

23

u/iscream4eyecream Feb 23 '24

Omg a Trump meets Trump skit would be amazing! They re both in the top 3 for Trump impressions, Jamie Fox is the third.

5

u/Fastbird33 Feb 23 '24

Like the Jimmy Fallon-Mick Jagger sketch 😆 Also if we’re counting all time, Darrel Hammond nailed the younger more coherent Trump.

3

u/agent_cheeks_609 Feb 23 '24

Do t forget about Phil Hartman’s (RIP) Trump.

Why would you region lock a promo video? So bizarre

138

u/coltsmetsfan614 Feb 23 '24

Shane Gillis is actually illegal in Australia now

74

u/jimmycoola Feb 23 '24

His australian accent was deemed TOO good, and its considered cultural appropriation

I don’t really like Shane Gillis but the hired to fired to hosting pipeline is fucking hilarious gotta respect it.

-4

u/CostcoSampleBoy Feb 23 '24

Have you watched his YouTube special? I was pleasantly surprised. Still don’t love that he uses “gay” as a punchline in a couple jokes though.

125

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '24

Doesn't he use it in the context of making fun of over-masculine Fox News boomer dads?

96

u/Fastbird33 Feb 23 '24

Yeah that’s why context is key with comedy bits. Gotta listen through the whole bit first

→ More replies (6)

26

u/joeyGOATgruff Feb 23 '24

Yes.

Shane leans into the stereotype of the right but is liberal.

25

u/kearneycation Feb 23 '24

Having watched his special, I doubt he's a liberal. I also don't think he's fully conservative. He strikes me as a bit of a centrist with some conservative views and some liberal views.

29

u/joeyGOATgruff Feb 23 '24

If you watch him on other podcasts he out right says he's a Democrat. Jokes are one thing but him as a person is another.

He's a millennial that isn't PC and can rub people the wrong way - but those are his jokes. He's come out in defense of pro-choice, an LGBTQ+ ally, pro-social safe guards, etc.

I'm at work rn, I'll try and find some clips when I'm off

4

u/redditor_here Feb 23 '24

True, but his dad is 100% a trumper 😂😂

Phil has some of the greatest appearances on the cast though. Definitely check those episodes out.

2

u/joeyGOATgruff Feb 23 '24

Dads named Phil are goat'ed. Phil Margera and Bam and now Phil Gillis with Shane.

8

u/kearneycation Feb 23 '24

The Democrats are a centrist party though. They may be left of the Republicans but that doesn't mean they're a leftist/liberal party.

8

u/redredrocks Feb 23 '24

Liberal is basically equivalent with center left in discourse at this point but I hear you

→ More replies (4)

2

u/tyler-86 Feb 23 '24

Biden is pretty moderate but there does exist a contingent of liberals trying to pull that party further to the left than I want to go. I consider myself a Democrat right now but I'm not full Reddit-left.

u/nothappyaboutit Feb 23 '24

His Netflix special is even better imo.

28

u/fy_pool_day Feb 23 '24

He says it like he knows it’s wrong but wants the reaction. He is also the guy who thinks being intolerant of gay people is ridiculous.

18

u/Fastbird33 Feb 23 '24

Yeah it’s a leveled joke. Some people just see the surface of something and get outraged like RDJ’s blackface in Tropic Thunder.

8

u/tyler-86 Feb 23 '24

It's funny because, at the time, Simple Jack was way more controversial than RDJ in blackface (because of the context).

7

u/BlueGoosePond Feb 23 '24

Yeah I don't think it's bigoted or anything, but it's just weird to hear people using "gay" that way these days. Especially since the joke isn't really a commentary on 90s vernacular or anything.

9

u/Bourbontoulouse Feb 23 '24

I work blue collar and it's not weird to hear that at all, I hear that shit 20x a day. In the white collar world it probably is pretty weird

4

u/MatsThyWit Feb 23 '24

I work blue collar and it's not weird to hear that at all, I hear that shit 20x a day. In the white collar world it probably is pretty weird

In the white collar world they say way, way, way worse shit on the regular It's just that far less people actually hear it.

3

u/Bourbontoulouse Feb 23 '24

Haha interesting to know. These people sound sheltered if they think people aren't saying pretty vile things on the daily. Using gay as an insult is the tamest thing you would hear on a jobsite.

24

117

u/Genova_Witness Feb 23 '24

Wild that Shane Gillis is considered more controversial then 21. What a world

23

u/Risquechilli Feb 23 '24

Wait why is 21 controversial?

24

u/jscummy Feb 23 '24

All the typical things that come with being a rapper, recently scammed a streamer for 120k on their live stream

7

u/Bardic_Inspiration66 Feb 23 '24

That’s funny though

1

u/CrashTestOrphan Feb 24 '24

That's a good bit, maybe he should host sometime

1

u/Risquechilli Feb 24 '24

Oh I just heard about this story. Apparently the same streamer got scammed out of $2M by another rapper. Maybe that’s just his thing now lol

40

u/SanchoMandoval Feb 23 '24

According to Wikipedia... he pulled a gun at a pool party (after someone else did), ripped off a concert promoter for $17k, seemed to go along with the story that he was born in Georgia when in fact he lived in London, UK until he was 7. Got sued by Conde Nast for mentioning Vogue magazine without permission, some real gangsta shit right there.

As potential controversies go these days uhhh that sounds almost quaint.

17

u/ahhhhhhhhhhuhhh Feb 23 '24

It’s more they’re pointing out it’s ironic that making a song about killing someone, selling drugs, calling women hoes, etc isn’t held to the “no he’s serious, words hurt people” as a joke made by Shane Gillis.

0

u/tvuniverse Feb 23 '24

yeah...i think a lot of people think racism is worse than lying about where you were born and copyright infringement.

Given how Shane Gillis likes to make Down syndrome jokes, and that is trisomy of the Chromosome 21, that joke was weirder to me than they might have planned.

38

u/thoriginal Feb 23 '24

I mean, TBF, his Down's Syndrome jokes aren't at the expense of people with Down's. He actually has some pretty enlightened and progressive views on handicapped people.

He makes jokes about them, not make jokes of them. And I'm no Gillis stan, I only first heard of him when it was announced he was hosting.

12

u/Intelligent-Mud1437 Feb 23 '24

I like his bit about his cousin's grilled cheese sandwiches.

8

u/thoriginal Feb 23 '24

Yeah exactly! Before he tells that story in his special, he even says something like "if you have family or friends with Down's syndrome, you know." And it's so true! I grew up with an uncle with Down's and my ex's cousin has it too, and they're just the best people.

2

u/ScyllaGeek Feb 24 '24

I appreciate how humanizing that bit is too. A lot of people walk on eggshells around the topic and the whole segment is basically like, "guys, they're just people, it's OK," and the jokes were never at his relatives' expense - it was just relating funny experiences with them

2

u/hooligan99 Feb 23 '24

The whole special Olympics section of Gus’s YouTube special is unbelievably good, and clearly shows he supports and loves them.

1

u/bobby_table5 Feb 24 '24

Not it’s not and they have no reason to be.

Me getting downvoted is revealing weird things about people reading my comments. I have relatives with the same condition and I found Shane’s take very revealing of the perspective you get from talking to them.

86

u/Brendanaquitss Feb 23 '24

Why does he give me Louis CK vibes?

155

u/loudrain99 Feb 23 '24

I don’t think there’s a comedian under 40 who can say that Louis didn’t have some effect on their comedy style.

21

u/joeyGOATgruff Feb 23 '24

Louis did the Secret Podcast and all they did was talk about every president. It was incredibly entertaining - long parts of it were more educational than funny.

Which leads to Shane's joke about George Washington's dentures and crossing the Delaware

14

u/red_simplex Feb 23 '24

It's like 6 hours of history jokes. Highly recommended.

2

u/joeyGOATgruff Feb 23 '24

It's so good

5

u/herefromyoutube Feb 23 '24

Literally the podcast that got me listening to MSSP.

45

37

u/Acrobatic_Advance_71 Feb 23 '24

They have similar vibes. If you like US history Shane and Louie have like 5 pods where they talk about every Us president. It was shocking informative with some absurd comedy mixed in.

4

u/thoriginal Feb 23 '24

Where can I find that, lol?

I've got a little roadtrip to do today, and I normally listen to an audiobook.

2

2

I loved that so much, I wish they had a podcast together, or if Shane would just do a history podcast. That was truly the most enjoyable history lesson I’ve ever heard

7

u/Krock23 Feb 23 '24

He openly admits Louis is his fave and mimicked him when he first started out.

Shane's President's Podcast series with Louie is a really fun listen.

Who is Shane Gillis? I’m Australian so he sounds like a cricket player to me. For really though, I don’t use SM outside of reddit - who dat?

25

u/mcnuggets83 Feb 23 '24

Aussie news hated him for a little bit after his last special when he joked about y’all down under.

3

u/trevno Feb 23 '24

Call Men at Work, they’ll take him out. 🎯

2

u/redditor_here Feb 23 '24

Oh god those Australian impressions were insane

19

u/BusinessBeetle Feb 23 '24

Comedian, has the most subscribed to Patreon. A few years back was hired on SNL then fired after some people dug up some comedy bits about Asians. After that he blew up and is one of the biggest touring comedians.

4

u/tvuniverse Feb 23 '24

you left out the part where he has the most subscribed pateon largely in part due to the fact that he was fired by SNL.

People keep leaving that part out. He wouldn't be as big or popular if it weren't for him being fired. Prior to SNL, he was not as popular. He was fired, a couple big comedians like Louis CK and Bill Burr spoke out in his defense and suddenly he was a martyr and forbidden fruit.

15

u/BusinessBeetle Feb 23 '24

I would say his popularity is due to him being funny.

→ More replies (4)

11

u/swampswing Feb 23 '24

That isn't what happened at all. He blew up thanks to his Gilly and Keeves sketch series.

1

u/tyler-86 Feb 23 '24

That's certainly an oversimplification but he does seem to have a weird kinda bro-y subsection of his fanbase.

0

u/tvuniverse Feb 23 '24 edited Feb 23 '24

It's not an "oversimplification". It's simply the fact of the matter, as you can see in the multiple links below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/1axrdoy/comment/krt19xc/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

What is an oversimplification is saying he's only popular because he's funny, when in reality a great deal of his popularity comes from him being used as a token in the culture war against "woke-ism" and "cancel culture" and even HE ACKNOLEGES THIS!

7

u/joeyGOATgruff Feb 23 '24 edited Feb 23 '24

Look him up on YouTube. He leans into the conservative stereotypes but is pretty liberal. He's the hottest comic today - his sketch show Gilly and Keeves was great.

https://youtu.be/KBtrQ0GJSV0?si=BdPK18uoXhUPsRY_

https://youtu.be/QxSCFASl6-k?si=VBVCvYy-zt2iTirf

https://youtu.be/5xqA-L6Ev6s?si=ApRKNeiLzmpb3yPI

He was supposed to join SNL with Bowen Yang but a failed comic turned blogger - who was ostracized by the NY comics scene and got bitter - found an old podcast of Shane doing an Asian voice when explain how crazy Chinatown in NYC is. He was hired and 24hrs later fired. Since then, a rocket was strapped to his back

I've been following Shane and Matt since 2018. I discovered them through C*mtown podcast - which is now the Adam Friedland Show. He was great on Legion of Skanks. Flagrant 2. Even the Matt and Shane Secret Podcast has great guests and comedy.

It's weird seeing these guys take off. It's definitely "edgier" comedy so I'm curious how it'll translate

2

u/redditor_here Feb 23 '24

For anyone about to discover the secret cast, check out the Old Testament episodes. You can find them on YouTube under the Radio DAWGS account.

Those first 100+ episodes were seriously wild. Highly offensive too, if you’re easily offended.

3

Can't wait, I'm a big fan of his podcast and stand-up! It'll be interesting to watch him do something unrelated to comedy for a night!

49

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '24

It's hilarious how many people want this episode to fail lmao it's going to be one of the best of the season!

16

u/Flybot76 Feb 23 '24

It's even more hilarious how you're saying that when nobody in the thread is even implying they want him to fail, but you're so busy pretending somebody is offended that you don't even notice when nobody is

→ More replies (1)

5

u/FunDmental Feb 23 '24

It's gonna be fine. Like any other episode of SNL, lots of people will love it and lots of people will hate it. I think the "hate it" crowd tends to be louder most weeks, but I imagine it'll be the opposite this time, because of Shane's anti-woke bro-fans.

I don't want SNL to fail - I just want to not feel morally conflicted in watching my favorite show.

3

u/herefromyoutube Feb 23 '24 edited Feb 24 '24

I think it will be good because Shane has/had a sketch Comedy show on YouTube with great skits.

I know this man had a couple of SNL skits prepared when he got hired and probably thought of some great ones in between firing and now.

Comedians are usually great hosts.

2

18

u/jscummy Feb 23 '24

Secretly British is a fate worse than death or prison

7

u/marteautemps Feb 23 '24

I'm sure it hurt his street cred way more than prison or death would at least

7

u/Routman Feb 23 '24

First promo was very funny, this one feels generic - hopefully Shane can bring an authentic showing

14

u/SpecialAmbassador313 Feb 23 '24

All these kinds of promos are so strange to me like they must just stand the three together for the first time and have them come up with bits on the spots

10

u/rekipsj Feb 23 '24

The third one was funny. Shane’s got to walk a very odd line here. Push tongs enough to please the push things crowd. Play safe enough to please the play safe crowd. Make it the best show of the year to satisfy the hype of a would be cast member getting a second shot. That’s pressure. Better stuff some grilled cheese in your pockets.

1

u/redditor_here Feb 23 '24

Mark Normand mentioned recently in a podcast that Shane was talking about how out of touch the SNL writers have become. They are gonna neuter our boy so that he’s more palatable to the woke crowd.

6

u/Bigboobsrespecter Feb 23 '24

I don't hate him. He just isn't very funny to me. His comedy is mostly mean spirited and not really witty. He's got a huge following though.

10

u/BlueGoosePond Feb 23 '24

I don't think he's mostly mean spirited, but there's enough in there for it to be noticeable and to detract from otherwise good bits.

His bit about visiting Mount Vernon calls the tour guide a fat bitch for no reason (other than comedic shock value, I guess?).

2

u/meowed Feb 23 '24

Have you seen his Netflix special?

Only the last one fits Shane’s personality.

I hope they let him do his thing and don’t try to box him up. I didn’t want like him either for the longest time but there is a little charm to his persona.

His special that was all sketch comedy was the absolute funniest sketches I’ve seen in a while. I haven’t even seen his stand up.

6

u/saxguy9345 Feb 23 '24

The writers know his comedy, and I wouldn't doubt he will help them make his episode great. He did his own sketch show Gilly and Keeves. I think it's going to be a barn burner lol

1

u/jahnbodah Feb 23 '24

The last one made me laugh out loud.

3

21 savage scammed $200k from a streamer like 2 weeks ago hahaha I mean the streamer is a loser but I still think 21 savage is a bitch

Am I the only one who doesn’t know who Shane Gillis is?

3

u/Fataleo Feb 23 '24

This sub ironically doesn’t seem to follow comedy all that closely

-1

u/desiswiftie Feb 23 '24

I follow comedy, I just have decent taste

3

u/Fataleo Feb 23 '24

Well you wouldn’t know if Shane is good or not as you’ve never even heard of him

Kind of, yeah. I get a lot of people on here don’t keep up with stand up but Shane became well known because he was hired and immediately fired by SNL.

3

u/redditor_here Feb 23 '24

It’s fine if you don’t know about Shane, but if you’re a comedy fan, he’s one of the biggest up and coming comics.

He’s also one of the rare “canceled” comics that doesn’t want to lean into the whole “free speech” angle. Our boy just wants to make hilarious jokes and say wild shit on the cast.

Judging by how ok the episode was with Ayo (in which she was fantastic but the writing was still meh), I got high hopes for Gillis.

I don't LOVE his work, but I think this has the potential to be a good show!

u/AliGreen13sCPSworker Feb 23 '24

u/Acrobatic_Advance_71 Feb 23 '24

-3

u/diegzs Feb 23 '24

I’ll wait for the next episode

3

u/Fataleo Feb 24 '24

That’s how plenty of people have felt for years

7

u/Toadvin Feb 23 '24

I’ve been waiting for the next episode for the last 10 years, I’m excited to finally have a reason to watch again

2

u/FunDmental Feb 23 '24

You haven't seen a single host or musician come through SNL that you like in the past 10 years? Like, why are you in this subreddit?

3

u/Fataleo Feb 24 '24

Plenty of people are currently here for Shane

This is a really fun thread of a crossover event. Where the Dawgs (Shane Gillis fans) come to an SNL to support Shane any way they can. They'll also be cancelling and tuning in to watch him on TV - on SNL - where he's come back to sort of vindicate himself and also a lot of core/childhood memories came from SNL.

Hopefully they stick around and support SNL.

It's all been respectful too.

u/DDub04 Feb 24 '24

I became an SNL and Shane Gillis fan independently of the other, so this is more of a fun event then a catalyst for anything. I will still continue to enjoy both regardless of the outcome.

Albino Grimace is hosting this week.

u/5lokomotive Feb 24 '24

They need to bench James Austin Johnson this episode. Shane Gillis does one of the best Trump impressions I’ve heard.

Wow, you should write for the show

This will be the first full episode of SNL I've ever watched (I'm 37) and it's all for Gilly. He's going to bring a lot of non-SNL watchers and SNL haters in for this one.

Him hosting SNL after all that went down is a huge win for comedy and a huge kick to the nuts of all the lame puritans trying to police comedy. People hoping for Shane to suck tonight are going to be severely disappointed. He's going to murder because he's way funnier than anyone on the show and it's going to raise his stock even more.

This guy is terribly unfunny.

3

u/Toadvin Feb 23 '24

Just out of curiosity, who do you find funny?

2

u/RequirementLeading12 Feb 23 '24

You want a full list or just a top 10? Also, is it just comedians or can comedic actors be included? I find a lot of people funny.

1

u/Toadvin Feb 23 '24

How about just the comedians
