That was GSM TDMA noise. Nextel had a different noise entirely and kicked like a mule, hard enough that if you sat your phone under a CRT monitor, it messed with the monitor sync and the whole monitor would twitch before an alert went off. CDMA ran at much lower power levels so it was rare to hear, but when you did hear it, it sounded like hissing and occasional blips.

Daamn, I remember how annoying that was. I didn’t realize that it had anything to do with cell phone signals, though. But yeah, that sound was ubiquitous.

First song I downloaded on Napster. We argued for days about what they were singing. We'd quickly try to write it down when we heard it on the radio. We talked about getting out a tape recorder so we could go back and review it. Maybe even buying the damn CD.
And then you could just download songs? For free? Without even leaving your home? First thing, Eiffel 65.

My daughter looooooooves this song. I used to love it but listening to it over and over…..

u/unique3 7h ago
I was visiting family in Europe summer of 1999 and top 2 songs were Blue and Mombo #5. Both played to the point I was sick of it. Came home and started grade 12, about a month or two in both songs suddenly topped the charts, so I got to experience the overplaying twice. On the plus side I completely missed Nookie topping the charts.

Palo Alto and Killer Cars. I ended up with those and never understood RH at the time. Now I can’t even recall those two songs other than the titles and love the rest of the discog.

When Kid A came out, I was transformed.
It later went on to be described as one of the best albums of all time (multiple lists).
I know there are a lot of those types of lists out there but it deserves its place in history. A must listen, there’s little argument to be made.
What an album.

The Windows welcome sound or the AOL sound. Every time I got on the computer late at night, I'd forget to turn them down, and my cover was almost blown many times by those sounds.

I call shenanigans. Float on was the 3rd track on the album “good news…”. I agree I also deleted horn intro. But track 1 would have been “the world at large”.

u/garytyrrell 15h ago
What song comes to mind. Not what comes on first. And why on earth would you delete Horn Intro? Gets me right into the mood.

Thunderstruck
I can't remember if it was Napster or limewire but we had a ton of music downloaded onto our ancient computer. We would have parties and for some reason after every song it would go back to the top song, which was alphabetically listed and was ac/dc thunderstruck.
It played probably 100 times a night. At least the intro did before someone went over and changed it.
