Yeah the mask on the new character made me doubt it was Ghost. But then the wind blew and she went that way, I knew it was the sequel.
It looks as cinematic as I remember the first

Had a sort of spaghetti western meets samurai vibe. I’d be psyched if that’s the theme they’re going for.
191
u/GuaranteedCougher 10h ago
Me too. Samurai movies and Westerns have always inspired each other and been very connected
148
u/ParadoxNowish 10h ago
Spaghetti western IS samurai, just translated across cultures
78
u/Drkarcher22 9h ago
Yep, Kurosawa even successfully sued Sergio Leone over copyright because Fistful of Dollars was a clear remake of Yojimbo
47
u/ParadoxNowish 9h ago
Exactly. Magnificent Seven is just a remake of Seven Samurai. Both are great but Kurosawa did it first
47
u/SinisterDexter83 9h ago
Not exactly. Kurosawa was so inspired by John Ford's Westerns that he always wore a baseball cap and sunglasses when directing, so he could look like his hero.
Kurosawa was inspired by Westerns, and Westerns were inspired by Kurosawa.

Kurosawa was inspired by Westerns, and Westerns were inspired by Kurosawa.

u/ACO_22 10h ago
I was kinda sad not to see Jin, but this will be a day one nonetheless
663
u/Drkarcher22 10h ago
I get it, Jin’s story has a feeling of a definitive ending regardless of his choice of end
293
u/Vestalmin 10h ago
Also great way to avoid progressing past a huge end game choice in a sequel.
→ More replies (4)44
u/---OOdbOO--- 10h ago
Sorry been a while since I played but what choice?
186
u/Necessary_Assist_859 10h ago edited 10h ago
Spoilers: You have to choose between killing your uncle, thus restoring your honor as a samurai, or sparing him and fully become the Ghost.
125
u/Feramah 10h ago
To be fair the lead game designer has already stated in a stream back in the day what the "canon" ending would be if they used Jin in a future game. And it's the one where he doesn't do the deed. The game is called Ghost of Tsuhima afterall.
Id also argue while it's nice we get the choice, the game pushes you regardless into being the ghost.
Also he wouldn't get his honor back, its more about giving honor to his uncle if he so chooses to.
→ More replies (3)37
u/Drkarcher22 8h ago
Yeah that’s the important part of the choice, whether Jin gives in for his Uncle’s sake and let’s him have his honor in death or “spares” him to live with the same consequences of what Jin did and the hypocrisy of the “code”. Has less to do with Jin and his mental state and everything to do with his Uncle. Forcing him to live in a world of grey or letting him die “pure”
Jin is who he is regardless of what he does there.
97
u/Vestalmin 10h ago edited 9h ago
See I love this decision because I took it more as honoring your uncle that you respect. I still considered Jin on the Ghost path while still giving his uncle the respect he wanted
→ More replies (1)76
u/BARD3NGUNN 9h ago
This was my reading of the scene.
To leave your uncle alive would have completely fractured your relationship with him and dishonoured him as a warrior, to strike him down, gives him a warriors death, and shows Jins respect for his uncle.
And that's what makes the scene so brilliant, because the natural thought process is "Jin loves this man, he's spent a chunk of the game trying to save him, of course he wouldn't want to kill him - yet I know he would".
75
u/TheDeathlySwallows 9h ago
Ah, but you disregard the most important part of that choice: which color ghost armor you want to unlock.
→ More replies (2)23
u/lukane89 9h ago
Exactly..I wanted to let him live but that white was too clean 🤣
→ More replies (0)5
u/CavortingOgres 8h ago
I mean I don't know. I understand the line of thinking, but Jin has evolved beyond the strictness of the samurai code.
I feel that with how much he has grown he could bear the additional pain of the end of his relationship with his uncle to keep him alive.
I do think the choice is beautifully done though, because whether you feel as you do or I do the choice feels complete and impactful.

u/22Seres 10h ago
The simple reason is that the period of time that Jin would realistically be alive severely limits what they can do in terms of the world and mechanics. They're jumping forward into the Edo period, and that will open up so much for them.
125
u/KA1N3R 9h ago
That and Jin's personal character arc is just done. Not much more they could have done with him as a character
→ More replies (3)53
u/Ohnoherewego13 9h ago
Yep, but I'll admit it would be cool if he's mentioned in some lore as an Easter egg.
→ More replies (2)70
u/22Seres 9h ago
I'd actually be surprised if we didn't get references to him. He'd presumably be a rather important person in Japan's history given his role in fending off the Mongol invasion. So, we could hear something from other characters or perhaps in collectables in the world.
The interesting thing will be that even though he wouldn't be alive due to just the amount of years that have passed, there's no reason that his bloodline couldn't be. So, do we run into his descendants?
→ More replies (8)36
u/OMGDonutz 8h ago
Maybe hell be one of the legendary stories. Like when you get the flaming sword.
21
u/The_Woman_of_Gont 7h ago
That's my guess. He'll only be remembered as essentially a figure so large he's assumed to be mythical, who inspires this game's protagonist.
43
u/Grill_Enthusiast 10h ago
I guess it makes sense. There's potential for other "Ghost" stories in Japan, rather than making Jin a super-hero who travels around the country, fighting all sorts of evildoers lol.

u/Loki_of_Asgaard 8h ago
Not just the 1600's, 1603 explicitly. This just happens to be the year when Tokugawa took over the country as Shogun begining the Edo period. This is also what the novel/show Shogun was based on
29
u/Jedi_Council_Worker 8h ago
I think it's smart that it isn't a continuation of Jin's story so they don't have to worry about alienating people that didn't play the first game.

“To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead.”
“At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.“
Quote from Sucker Punch in the PlayStation blog.

Right, I don’t like it when the protag has a random power-down, regardless of how they write it in.

I liked the way the original God of War II did it. Die and go to Hel, and have a bunch of souls literally rip your powers away from you.
34
u/euphratestiger 8h ago
I liked that in GoW Ragnarok, they converted some of Kratos' runic attacks into normal attacks and powered them down a little. You get to keep what he unlocked but they aren't OP.
15
u/dasruski 6h ago
Also when asked about where all the equipment the brothers made, Kratos just said he used it.

Fallen Order’s sequel was a pleasant surprise by leaving you with your abilities. Though your time stop ability was changed to an Ult instead of a regular skill that’s used in combat and puzzles. I wonder how they’ll manage to add more abilities for the next game though.

u/SirWalrusVII 10h ago
Honestly I’m glad they did move on because there wasn’t much they could’ve done with Jin except hunt him down till the end of his days, his story was basically finished
54
u/BARD3NGUNN 9h ago
Agreed.
I think logically Jin's story was finished, there's not really anywhere new to take his character other than just giving him more people to fight until he eventually dies/sacrifices himself - whereas with this approach you can have it where Jin's legend inspires those who come after to become Ghosts.
Anyone can become the Ghost, and anywhere in Japan can have its own Ghost, but Jin was the one to start the legend, and now we get to explore his legacy.

Between the music, the long still shots of our protagonist, the way the devs describe it as an area outside the rule of Japan, and the overall tone of the trailer, it gives me a lot of western vibes. I know that spaghetti westerns borrowed a lot from Kurosawa and samurai movies, and I wonder if this will be the opposite. A samurai story leaning into (what people think of as) spaghetti western themes.

First Astro Bot and now this? It's almost as if Sony remembered how to make games!
Jokes aside, I've put hundreds of hours into multiple 100% playthroughs of Ghost of Tsushima, so needless to say this is a day one buy for me and probably will end up being my top PS5 title if it's anywhere near the quality of the first game.
I am also really interested about the period and setting—I would have loved a direct sequel featuring Jin on the mainland, but the decision to try something new is also a really intriguing concept, so I'm good either way. 2025 is shaping up to be a monster year for gaming—I'm really looking forward to it!
