This tattoo is so bad, they took the episode off Hulu and made Ken Jeong apologize for it.

u/Expensive-Course1667 20d ago
Maybe it's the sort of thing where you are supposed to stare at it for 30 seconds and then close your eyes and you'll see the reverse image appear correctly.

u/JohnProof 20d ago
If you say her name three times fast the right-hand image appears in the mirror.
38
5
u/Wize-Turtle 20d ago
That's exactly what the artist did. They stared at the picture for a minute and then looked at the skin and made the whole piece really fast before the image faded

lol my wives aunt got a portrait of their very white Dad and it’s just like this. The piece looks just like fucking Bill Cosby and it’s the best. Yet to snag a pic tho. It’s the same as this deal.

u/coldestclock 20d ago
Does she tell people it’s a tattoo of a bronze statue of her dad?

Artist was likely tired of seeing his work getting covered up, had to make sure that couldn’t happen again

I mean...sure, she looks like she's in a 19th century minstrel show, but I'll be damned if they didn't make sure to include that big mole on her neck. That's how you do a photorealistic tattoo!
15
u/squatting_your_attic 20d ago
Well it's a part of her, it's better than leaving it out as if that part wasn't okay.

Another poster said it was a good capture of the expression, which is true, but is that really an expression to immortalize?
Some of the most profitable portrait artists know when to enhance.

Can you do a portrait of my grandma but make her black since my Ancestry DNA came back and I am 2.3% African American

I'm not an tattoo artist, but I paint portraits and this happens when you wanna add extra dept and end up drawing shades over shades over shades until... It's too dark

Look it was a different time grandma didn’t understand how offensive doing black face was
14
u/Longjumping-Ant-77 20d ago
At no point did they think “maybe I’ve gone too far?”
4
u/stonemason81 20d ago
If that were on me, I'd either take a kebab slicer to my leg or take up motorcycle riding and "have an accident" - ensuring that hit the ground first!
4
u/PonyAnyS2 20d ago
I think he just accepted and didn’t want to complain, or it would be too late to say something, it may be that he is shy or in fact this was the client’s choice...
8
u/Longjumping-Ant-77 20d ago
Well I also just wonder about the artist…
7
u/trin2trin 20d ago
That's what I was thinking! At one point he needed to stop and check his work...and still felt it was good to continue 🥴

u/Heavy_Cherry_530 20d ago

u/Zigglyjiggly 20d ago
"No man, it isn't terrible. The photo I showed the artist for a reference was a negative. It was a stylistic choice, man. Totally planned."
5
u/PonyAnyS2 20d ago
I have no doubt that it was the customer’s choice, we’ve seen everything in this sub...
11
10
u/PunkAssBitch2000 20d ago
That’s really unfortunate. Especially because the artist seems to have a good understanding of shapes as it does look a lot like the reference, except for the um…. how do I put this….

How TF are you gonna blackface a tattoo. That's diabolical, especially if the person didn't ask for it.

This is so strange, the likeness is really good, the proportions and expression are excellent, but the shading… the shading

As an artist I'm just trying to figure out how they went this wrong when they actually did a decent job with the hair... they seem to understand how light/shadow and shading works but had a stroke while doing the face??

If it’s a new tattoo, it may look really good after it fully heals. There was an artist on ink master that did a Bill Clinton tattoo and looked as bad as this. They got kicked from the show for it, but it healed PERFECTLY. Link: https://x.com/valkyriesbard/status/735287520292962305

Ya I think I want a nice tattoo of my Grandma, and you know what?? Let’s do her like an old lady, playing another old lady who’s dressed as another old lady! Catch my drift? It should be cool!!!

The whole idea of tattooing someone's face on you is weird. Like can't you just get a locket? I've even seen them for men where they just look like a dog tag but with a photo or engraved image on it. Like tattoos of people rarely look like them but also what if you find out in 10 years they had some terrible secret. And it's usually of old people and I'm like ... would the old person even like that you had a tattoo at all much less of their face?

What a shame, because the portrait isn’t terrible. Then the artist applied blackface.

Was the customer sedated during this nonsense?! At some point you've got to look down 20 minutes into shading like "Yo... cut that sh*t out".
2
2
u/Bitter-Inflation5843 20d ago
The artist can draw because the likeness is really good but he obviously can’t shade.
