Contractually Obligated Garbage would be a great stand-up special name.

530

u/SeveralAngryBears 12h ago

Monty Python released a "Contractual Obligation Album" of songs and audio skits in 1980

395

u/ephemeratea 12h ago

Of COURSE Monty Python already thought of it and did it 40+ years ago

162

u/Chaosmusic 12h ago

Before Simpson's Did It there was Monty Python Did It.

65

u/copperwatt 10h ago

"Monty Python Did It" would be a good name for a Monty Python project.

7

u/loverevolutionary 8h ago

"Monty Python Project" would be a great name for a stand-up special.

4

u/GutsGoneWild 7h ago

Or a prog rock or math rock band name

3

u/sinkwiththeship 7h ago

"Monty Python did IT" is something I would watch.

1

u/8oD 3h ago

The...Larch...

1

u/bomboclawt75 2h ago

The Goons did it first.

Harry, Peter and Spike.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goon_Show

16

u/spasmoidic 10h ago

the episode where Lisa grows a tiny civilization in a dish (1996) was copied from an episode of the Twilight Zone in 1962

20

u/humansarenothreat 10h ago

The Simpsons is satire, so most of their content is borrowed, but especially their Halloween special. I only say that so you can check out some of the original works and see how most of the time they’re playing homage to those creators.

5

u/Induced_Karma 9h ago

The Simpson’s adaptation of Poe’s The Raven is legitimately a great adaptation. Can’t remember which Treehouse of Horror it was on, but it’s worth looking up if you’re a Poe fan.

1

u/RIPEOTCDXVI 8h ago

It's the very first TOH, season 2.

1

u/SweetieLoveBug 5h ago

With the late, great James Earl Jones doing the reading. God Rest His Soul. 😢

2

u/benchley 10h ago

There's also Microcosmic God by Theodore Sturgeon.

2

u/Kurdt234 8h ago

You mean to tell me they didn't invent children of the corn, the fly, you only live twice or Macbeth?

-1

u/spasmoidic 8h ago edited 6h ago

this one is obscure enough that most people weren't aware it was adapted from something else. I'm not saying it's bad, I just didn't even know that until a decade+ later

2

u/I_Am_Dynamite6317 8h ago

They’ve done several episodes based on old Twilight Zone episodes.

1

u/spasmoidic 6h ago

what were the other ones?

2

u/Chaosmusic 8h ago

And then used again eith Bender in Futurama.

1

u/Sgt_General 8h ago

You know, I was god once.

2

u/see_bees 9h ago

The Rolling Stones also did it with the song Cocksucker Blues for Decca Records

1

u/Butt-Spelunker 8h ago

But when did Diddy did it?

2

u/Burntholesinmyhoodie 11h ago

Well itd be a lot more surprising if Monty Python did it this year wouldn’t it

2

u/throwaway4161412 11h ago

I think I need to tape a calendar to my forehead because I am constantly surprised that the 80's happened 40 years ago.

1

u/oh-shazbot 6h ago

resembles but is legally distinct from, of course

110

u/trumpuniversity_ 12h ago

Let’s not forget “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” by Nirvana.

36

u/Everestkid 11h ago

Which is a damn good song, love playing it on drums even though it's not the most technical thing ever.

The fact it starts with the guitar equivalent of The Most Annoying Sound In The World from Dumb and Dumber tops off the on-the-nose-ness.

2

u/I_Makes_tuff 6h ago

You're a saint. I can't stand the drums in that song and I've been playing since before it was released. It gives me anxiety.

1

u/flowella 1h ago

I'm no drummer, but that bridge part? Those are thunderous drums!

7

u/throwawaythtchpdyou 11h ago

Most underrated Nirvana song imo. Saw someone with a shirt the other day that said "What do I think I think?" on the back & immediately put this one back in rotation.

6

u/sixtyfivejaguar 9h ago

I used to have a homemade shirt that said "use just once and destroy". Good times.

3

u/the_joy_of_VI 6h ago

All of a sudden, my water broke

2

u/HerpankerTheHardman 12h ago

Really? Mandatory? I love that song!

61

u/wildwalrusaur 12h ago

also Weird Al's Mandatory Fun album

7

u/Lost_the_weight 9h ago

Oh man, caught him on his Mandatory World Tour. What an amazing performer. He and his band are tight as shit! If you get a chance, check him out! :-)

6

u/Extension_Ear_3472 8h ago

First concert I ever went to. Awesome show, great band, bunch of costume changes, just a really good time.

16

u/Tokasmoka420 12h ago

Didn't Neil Young release album so bad just to get out of a contract?

He's done it twice

2

u/andyman171 11h ago

3x

4

u/Character-Solution-7 10h ago

4X He was in Buffalo Springfield

1

u/napstimpy 8h ago

Van Morrison too.

3

u/HerpankerTheHardman 11h ago

Van Morrison did a whole album to get out of a contract. Van Morrison's Contractual Obligation Album

1

u/advintaged 7h ago

“The Big Royalty Check” track LOL

2

u/ThisOnes4JJ 11h ago

We regret to inform you that all the musicians have been sacked.

2

u/spokenotwheel 7h ago

They also made an early video game for PCs called Monty Python’s Complete Waste of Time.

1

u/Beneficial_Wolf3771 12h ago

Van Morrison did a similar thing to wrap up his contract with Bang records. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Sessions_%2767

1

u/NoRightsProductions 11h ago

Marvin Gaye released an album “Here, My Dear” as part of a divorce settlement

1

u/SynthBeta 11h ago

Not as much of a copout as The Holy Grail

1

u/ArbutusPhD 10h ago

Solid gold.

1

u/Detroitaa 8h ago

Marvin Gaye had a contractually obligated album, mandated in his divorce (proceeds to go to his wife). He entitled it, Here My Dear!

1

u/Jaydamic 7h ago

I had it on cassette!

1

u/Able_Row_4330 5h ago

I've got that album. It's basically a 'best of' with their songs mixed in and a scant few new bits to glue it all together.

1

u/Scottland83 5h ago

They also do their reunion tour to recoup losses from a recent lawsuit. I wonder if that could make a pithy name.

1

u/spmahn 4h ago

Let’s not forget Willie Nelson’s IRS Album

1

u/PhonedZero 4h ago

Its a wonderful 2 album collection, my 14y/o son and i enjoyed it together for the first time on a road trip this summer.

0

u/Steviesgirl1 12h ago

Nobody ever expects the Monty Python Inquisition! 😂

18

u/Esternaefil 12h ago

Pretty great punk album name.

Not so great for a sex tape, but... You never know.

30

u/MarlonShakespeare2AD 12h ago

I feel Ricky Gervais would have a good go at that one

65

u/Yetimang 12h ago

Yeah but he also loves to cry about how canceled he is.

97

u/ImWhatsInTheRedBox 12h ago edited 12h ago

You're just not allowed to tell jokes anymore, you can't say anything, even though I'm saying them right now as I'm complaining about how I'm not allowed to say the things I'm saying, on stage, in front of a full audience and cameras so the things I can't say anymore will also be on TV and streaming!

46

u/witchywater11 12h ago

But he's not afraid to call out how fake Hollywood is, which he does every time he shows up at an awards show and is always invited back without a single issue! He's so brave!

6

u/MisirterE 10h ago

*The emperor has no clothes*

"Can you guys believe the emperor's running around in his underwear?"

55

u/amievenrealrightnow 12h ago

What's the matter, guys? Too challenging for ya?

20

u/King_Thunda 12h ago

Well STRAP IN!

1

u/BeeOk1235 11h ago

AND BUTTER UP, WE"RE GOING LIVE TO DIDDY"S RAPE DUNGEON IN DOWNTOWN HOLLYWOOD!

18

u/d33roq 12h ago

Came here for a James Acaster reference and was not disappointed.

11

u/hurtindog 12h ago

And getting paid to do it

10

u/R_Schuhart 10h ago

I read a spot on article about Gervais not to long ago, written by a journalist he used to be friends with. He said that Gervais basically made a name for himself by satirising establishment and "popular opinion". That used to be Tories and conservative worldviews, but in his opinion the liberal left wing ideology has overtaken them and have become the new establishment. So as to stay with his MO he now ridicules them because he feels that is what integrity is.

But he totally forgot that he didn't just rile against establishment because they deserve to be taken down a peg, but also because it was morally right and it was a cause he believed in. That is why his jokes now lack heart and are just mean, "punching up" only works if it is justified. Cutting satire comes from conviction.

4

u/hobbylobbyrickybobby 11h ago

That dude is fucking insufferable now. He just bitches about cancel culture and genders.

1

u/alphadoublenegative 1h ago

I’m not religious, at all, but if I have to hear Ricky Gervais or Penn Jillette tell me god doesn’t exist like it’s new information one more goddamn time I’m gonna fuck off and become a monk.

u/[deleted] 12h ago

[deleted]

1

u/JetSetMiner 12h ago

He jokes about it

5

u/n6mub 13h ago

Or a band name? A new punk group

2

u/StephenFish 12h ago

Probably the last project Shirley Manson worked on.

2

u/Naznarreb 9h ago

Conan O'Brien had the "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television Tour" after Jay Leno took The Tonight Show back from him

1

u/colinisthereason 12h ago

The compromising of morals and integrity in exchange for money

1

u/Klingon_Bloodwine 12h ago

Love it, its got some real "I'm just here so I don't get fined" energy.

1

u/Charwyn 12h ago

Or a band name

1

u/Grover_1976 11h ago

Brilliant. 😊

1

u/callmekizzle 11h ago

Or rebranding for Netflix

1

u/mattastrophe3 11h ago

Stanhope's "No Refunds" is probably my favorite.

1

u/spiraldrain 11h ago

Would go well with marshawn Lynch’s “I’m just here so I don’t get fined”

1

u/Funny_Perception420 10h ago

Nick Mullen pay attention!

1

u/cmoked 8h ago

It also describes my last contract

1

u/Birkin07 7h ago

Id tune in simply for the self awareness.

1

u/sniker77 6h ago

Truth, but she's not that self aware to call her own show that.

1

u/SillyBonsai 6h ago

😂 very fitting for Ellen too, ffs

1

u/Ok-CANACHK 5h ago

like that footballl player a few years back, he had to be at the press conference due to contract terms & that's how he answered every question!

1

u/PadzieWadzie 5h ago

Sounds like a Carlin routine

1

u/crookedparadigm 5h ago

Like Weird Al when he wanted to break away from his label, but they said he was contracted for one more album so he released Mandatory Fun on youtube.

1

u/QueefBuscemi 3h ago

...for 99% of all Netflix specials.

-4

u/xjeeper 13h ago

Basically any of the Adam Sandler Netflix movies

11

u/gredr 12h ago

Haven't they been rather successful?

2

u/totorohatqween 12h ago

Yeah say what you like about the quality but pre Netflix most of his films made money and now they're always on Netflix's most watched. They're easy entertainment.

1

u/Trip4Life 12h ago

They’ve been hit or miss I think, but more hits than misses. They just have a bad reputation, I think they’re good though.

0

u/Enchelion 12h ago

Adam Sandler movies always make money.

2

u/xjeeper 12h ago

They're still garbage. I'm holding out hope for Happy Gilmore 2, though.

0

u/Heisenburgo 12h ago

Great name for all Marvel/Star Wars shows on D+ too
