Death Penalty States With a Gubernatorial Hold on Executions (6)

In California on Mar. 13, 2019, Gov. Gavin Newsom said “I will not oversee the execution of any person while Governor...Our death penalty system has been, by all measures, a failure.” Office of the Governor Gavin Newsom, Governor Gavin Newsom Orders a Halt to the Death Penalty in California, March 13, 2019

That is consistent with what I said.

But even if you accept the premise that temporarily pausing executions is the same thing as banning them, there are other states on there that went blue in 2020 that still have an active death penalty, like Nevada. And states like Kansas, which have a Democratic governor but other Republican victories.

The unfortunate fact is that the Democratic Party has actually shifted right ward on this issue. Idk why anyone would pretend otherwise.

Democrats do not have opposition to the death penalty on their platform for the first time since 2012.
